Scuba Diving at Bazaruto Island

Indigo Bay will help to plan every diving trip, taking care of all the details from safety precautions to the final dive entry. We have our onsite scuba diving instructor who can assist you from beginner courses to more advanced reef diving.

Dune Boarding

The dunes of Bazaruto Island are of the highest in the archipelago and make for exciting dune boarding. The boards are fairly broad and require very little skill to master. Basically you jump up on your board and whizz down to the bottom!

Horse Riding

There are a number of exciting trails around the island, of varying length and difficulty. Full chaps and riding hats are available. Basic riding lessons are conducted by the Horse Facility Manager at the stables.

Watersports

Indigo Bay offers a range of water sports that may be enjoyed in the warm Indian Ocean just off the beach near the lodge. These include waterskiing (wake snake, wake boarding, kneeboarding, doughnutting), non-motorised water sports like kayaks and windsurfers and Hobiecat sailing.

Island Drives

Another special activity at Indigo Bay , involves fascinating drives in our 4x4 vehicle on and around Bazaruto Island . Interesting things to see include; visits to local villages and interaction with the chief, excursions to a 19th century lighthouse, Sailfish Bay on the pristine east shore, and glorious sunsets on the dunes.

Snorkelling

The waters off Bazaruto Island are of such a superb standard that you need not be a scuba diver to enjoy the amazing diversity of the marine riches. There are a number of excellent dive sites where snorkellers will be able to appreciate the stunning tropical reefs, whales, dolphins, marine turtles and other exotic marine life.

Birdwatching

With more than 180 species of birds, a vast range of Palaearctic migrants, 26 species of waders and huge flocks of pelicans and flamingoes which can be seen in and around the coastal lakes and tidal pools, Indigo Bay Island Resort is a bird lovers paradise.

Stargazing

The clear skies above the island are ideal for stargazing. As there is no interfering artificial light from nearby cities nor any pollution in the skies to contend with – this is the perfect place to lie back and study the celestial treasures of Bazaruto Island.

Sport Fishing on the Bazaruto Archipelago

The Bazaruto Archipelago has been considered one of East Africa’s best, and certainly Mozambique’s, premier fishing destinations since the late 50’s, when pioneer anglers fishing from the basic fleet at Santa Carolina island discovered a very healthy population of giant black marlin in a sea which teemed with other, then so called “lesser gamefish.” Until the early seventies, when the country erupted into a 20-year civil war, many fish of biblical proportions were caught and the area gained a worldwide reputation for its grander marlin. The end of the civil war obviously brought a great interest for anglers to once again explore the archipelago’s water, and those lucky enough to have fished the area in the recent past have found that the Mozambican war years have left the resource virtually untouched, with fish close to the grander mark being commonly caught or released every year. The archipelago is still the only place in Africa to have produced black marlin in excess of a 1000 pounds and the current all-tackle African record for the species, was actually caught off the northern tip of Bazaruto Island in November 1998 - an incredible fish of 1298 pounds.

More than anything else, however, those anglers have found that the archipelago’s fisheries are much more than the Giant black marlin which migrate through its waters in the summer months. They have discovered an amazing winter run of sailfish, a great variety of offshore species such as big wahoo, dorado, king mackerel, giant trevally and tuna, to name a few, as well as a great diversity of inshore species on the leeward of the islands, making it an ideal destination for light tackle and fly fisherman.

With this potential at its doorstep, Indigo Bay has set up a top quality big game sport fishing operation for you to take full advantage of.
